Interview with Harper Lee

Below is a link to an interview done with Harper Lee, the author of "To Kill A Mockingbird."  Read it and answer the questions below.  Email your answers.

After reading the interview, list 5 things in Lee's background and history that made her the right person at the right time to write "To Kill A Mockingbird."  Give details.

Lee left law college a little before she was to graduate.  Do you find this odd given the outcome of the trial of  Tom Robinson in her book?  Do you think the prevailing attitudes towards minorities in the setting of  "To Kill  A Mockingbird" is a reflection of Lee's perceptions of injustice in that regard?  Do you think this perception influenced her decision not to complete her law studies?  Elaborate.

Use your reading of "To Kill A Mockingbird" to write a persuasive essay over ONE of the two topics below. You only have to pick one.

Topic One:     I think Atticus Finch, the father in the book, "To Kill A Mockingbird," was a great father and parent.

Topic Two:     I think Atticus Finch, the father in the book, "To Kill A Mockingbird," was a poor father and parent.
